The Tribe Where Women Are Allowed To Marry Themselves And Have Families

In most societies, women dating or marrying themselves is seen as a taboo, whereas it is a good thing to some, which is the case of the Kurie tribe in thee Eastern part of Africa.

The Kurie tribe who are mainly into farming, can be found along the Tanzanian and Kenyan borders have such a rich and fascinating culture.

The tribe surprisingly supports circumcision for both male and female offsprings, but we are only going to focus on the weird custom where women marry their fellow women.

First, before you start judging, the Kurie women are only allowed to marry a fellow woman only for a specific reason which has nothing to do with romance.

Here is the reason.

This unusual custom makes it possible so that those women who couldn't bear children to still have a family.

In this case, the women who marries themselves do not put on wedding rings and they also do not share the same bed.

Same s3x marriage in Tanzania is regarded as illegal which has seen defaulters being made to face the wrath of the law.

However, when women are allowed to marry themselves in Kurie custom, it is known as nyumba ntobhu, which means “house of women”.

According to this strange custom, an old woman who does not have a male child is allowed to marry a younger woman who has a male child or might have a son in the future so that the son will inherit the old woman's land/lands and ensure that her lineage does not fade.
