9 Worst Foods You Should Stop Eating
Sorry to break it to you, but even though there are some foods you simply just can't ever seem to resist (we're talking cookies, nachos, onion rings—the stuff that taste oh so good) they're just not the best for you healthwise.
It's these nutrient-deficient foods you're going to want to avoid, as they can truly wreck your body, especially if you're trying to make healthier choices during these times when it's much easier to just load up on junk food.
And due to food manufacturers and deceptive marketers, even some of your seemingly "healthy" meals are filled with unhealthy fats, artificial ingredients, and unnecessary preservatives that are hazardous to your health, too.
On a mission to help you understand exactly what exactly is in your food, and why it's bad, we put together this list of the least nutritious foods on the planet that are so toxic, they just wreck your body.
Here are 9 worst foods you should stop eating.
Cheesy Fries
It’s no secret that fries are high in salt, fat and calories, and adding large amounts of cheese to this already unhealthy food makes this a terrible recipe for your health.
A regular portion of fries contains around 420 calories. Throw in 100g of cheddar cheese on top of this, and you will be adding a further 400 calories and 35g of fat to the fries.
Fried Desserts
Anything deep fried is a poor health choice, and coating a dessert that is already high in sugar and fat in batter is something you should avoid.
Fried foods can clog up your arteries which can, over time lead to heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
Sugary drinks
Added sugar is one of the worst ingredients in the modern diet.
However, some sources of sugar are worse than others, and sugary drinks are particularly harmful.
When you drink liquid calories, your brain doesn’t appear to register them as food. Thus, you may end up drastically increasing your total calorie intake.
When consumed in large amounts, sugar can drive insulin resistance and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Most pizzas
Pizza is one of the world’s most popular junk foods.
Most commercial pizzas are made with unhealthy ingredients, including highly refined dough and heavily processed meat. Pizza also tends to be extremely high in calories.
Chips
One ounce of regular potato chips has 152 calories and 10 grams of fat (3 grams saturated).
If you eat just three ounces a week, in one year you'll have consumed 23,400 calories and added about seven pounds to your waistline.
And that’s from just a couple handfuls – which barely constitutes a satisfying snack for most of us.
Doughnuts
White flour, vegetable shortening, white sugar – and it’s deep-fried to boot. One glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut packs 200 calories and 12 grams of fat, including heart-stopping saturated fat, trans fats and cholesterol.
An old-fashioned cake doughnut is even worse: 300 calories, 28 grams of carbohydrates and a whopping 19 grams of fat, including 5 grams of saturated fat and 4 grams of trans fats.
Margarine
Consuming a stick of margarine increases the risk for coronary heart disease because it contains trans fats.
The more solid the margarine, the more trans fats, according to a study in Epidemiology.
Butter is often a better choice for your toast. A 2016 review in PLOS One found very little links between butter consumption and heart disease.
Hot dogs
Processed meats in general are just one of the worst things you can put into your body. They're high in sodium and saturated fats (not the good kind, like those found in coconut) and filled with sodium nitrite (a commonly used preservative that adds color and flavor to meats) and often other chemicals and dyes.
Consumption of processed meats is associated with higher incidence of coronary heart disease and diabetes mellitus. High intake of red and processed meat is associated with significant increased risk of colorectal, colon and rectal cancers. If you want to reduce your risk of cancer, ditch the dogs.
Soda
Drinking soda is like drinking liquid candy. Seriously. Sodas are sugary calorie bombs that have contributed to the obesity epidemic in our country -- and our soda habit has also been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, premature aging and hormone disruption.
Most sodas contain high fructose corn syrup (which is where all the calories come from), food dyes, preservatives and other sketchy ingredients. And your soda habit isn't just making you fat; it's also linked to cavities and tooth decay.
